USAID's SUWASA program implemented two complementary projects in Bauchi State. One supports the Bauchi State government’s institutional and regulatory reform of the sector, and the other provides direct support to the utility to improve its operational performance. Both projects serve the primary objective to improve and expand access to safe, affordable, sustainable and reliable water services for the State’s urban residents.

The second phase of SUWASA in Nigeria, launched in early 2013, extended the SUWASA reform approach to two additional States: Ebonyi and Rivers – while providing an Abuja-based Secretariat to assist the Federal Ministry of Water Resources in developing and implementing a nation-wide water and sanitation reform strategy.  SUWASA’s Nigeria portfolio alone had a value of USD 10 million.
